Borsa Italiana IT director Alessandro Pelosi said the exchange migrated to AMD Opteron processor-based HP ProLiant BL series BladeSystem servers in part because of the high performance and performance-per-wattage of the Opteron chips.

Since it implemented the new servers, he said the company had increased server density by more than 100%, reduced its air conditioning usage and seen improved performance and efficiency with a lower total cost of ownership.

As such, the company plans to upgrade to AMD’s forthcoming quad-core offering, codenamed Barcelona.

I am expecting further heat reduction and more performance with ‘Barcelona,’ even as our server stress loads increase, Pelosi said.

Sunnyvale, California-based AMD said Borsa Italiana is the latest in its growing pool of exchange customers, which also include the London Stock Exchange, the NYSE Group, the International Securities Exchange’s Stock Exchange, Luxembourg Stock Exchange, Montreal Exchange and Philadelphia Stock Exchange.
