Information protection and storage services provider Iron Mountain has signed a new contract with Coal Liabilities Unit (CLU) of the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to continue to service CLU’s records and information management requirements for further ten years to 2019. The contract is valued in between £10m and £15m depending on the scale of activity required.
David O’Keefe-Williams, contract manager of Iron Mountain UK, said: “The Coal Liabilities Unit has over 3.7 million physical records and 2.7 terabytes of digital data that we manage. Collectively, our team has over 70 years of experience in working on coal records management.”
Iron Mountain said that it will provide the services to support the CLU, a directorate initially set up within the former Department of Trade and Industry, and which is primarily responsible for administering coal health claims as well as being responsible for the management of British Coal Corporation records.
Under the contract, Iron Mountain will manage, retrieve and protect in excess of 3.7 million physical records. In addition, it will also undertake the management of digital data that includes employment, personnel and training records, as well as records relating to coal industry estates and operations.
Gordon Brockington, director of public sector at Iron Mountain UK, said: “Our renewed agreement to work together for the next decade is an endorsement of our working relationship with DECC and our ability to provide a competitive service. We will continue to provide a tailored records management solution to support CLU’s work in dealing with the litigation process surrounding the British coal industry’s legacy.”
