The attack, a distributed ICMP echo attack, lasted for two and a half hours on February 27, and caused its web site, Whois database and DNS services to become mostly inaccessible during that time, RIPE said.

The attack was successfully mitigated with cooperation of our peer networks at the Amsterdam Internet Exchange, RIP said in a statement. At the peak of the attack, the network saw 90% packet loss.

RIPE NCC (for Reseaux IP Europeens Network Coordination Centre) is one of four Regional Internet Registries – international bodies responsible for the critical function of allocating IP address space to service providers.

The type of attack and target is reminiscent of the ICMP-based DDoS attacks on the internet’s domain name system root servers last October and the subsequent attack on the systems of UltraDNS Corp, which handles several domains including .info.
