Like the XScale-powered SS400-E, the Xeon-powered SR212CC is a white-box device aimed at channel integrators and resellers. It will scale up to 6TB across 12 ATA disk drives, within an enclosure made by Xyratex.
While the XScale-powered box could only run Linux, the Xeon in the latest box will run both Windows Storage Server 2003, and Red Hat Linux. Windows Storage Server is Microsoft’s NAS-tailored version of Windows, which also supports block-level data access, via iSCSI.
In terms of price, the SR212CC looks set to sit between the SS400-E and the AX-150. While the SS400-E tops out at around $2,000, the SR212CC will sell at below $3,000.
