Intel is reportedly developing a 64-bit Android OS version running on its latest Bay Trail Atom processors to power Android tablets.
According to the chipmaker, the new 64-bit Windows powered tablets would be launched during the first quarter of 2014.
Intel mobile and communications group general manager Hermann Eul said that it’s not only about Windows 64-bit, it’s about Android as well.
"We have 64-bit Windows shipping next quarter and, needless to say, we’ll run fast to make this happen on Android as well," Eul added.
Currently, tablets running on ARM and Intel processors incorporate 32-bit versions of Android.
The new 64-bit tablets would rival Apple’s Apple’s latest iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display, which already use A7 processor and iOS.
Intel is anticipating a massive tablet boom next year, expecting sales of about 40 million tablets with Intel chips, reporting a rise of 10 million during the current year.
