Integrated Systems Inc, ISI, says it can now execute Java in real-time with the combination of the PERC Portable Executive for Reliable Control virtual machine with its pSOS real-time operating system, RTOS. ISI has licensed PERC from NewMonics Inc for distribution with pSOS. ISI said the combination of the two takes up just 512Kb and executes raw byte code in the same way as JavaSoft’s Java virtual machine, but also includes real-time extensions. He said the JavaSoft system is not suitable for the real-time world because the garbage collection process would stop any real-time operation in its tracks. NewMonics gave ISI a migration kit, and ISI then developed components from that. PERC with pSOS for the Motorola Inc 68000 is available now for $40,000 for the license plus run-time royalties on top.
