Insignia Solutions Inc is concentrating on its core emulation business nowadays, and yesterday duly launched SoftWindows 98, the latest version of its PC emulation software. SoftWindows 98 enables Apple Computer Inc users to run Windows 98 applications on Power Macintoshes. The software is expected to ship in August, costing under $200, a price which includes a full copy of Windows 98. Insignia cites Windows 98’s Active Desktop, support for MMX graphics and the availability of DirectX and 3Dfx compatible games as good reasons for buying the product,.but given both the general feeling that Windows 98 doesn’t offer significant advances over Windows 95 to warrant the upgrade, and the gradual decline in the Apple user base, it’s hard to see how the new product will improve Insignia’s struggling situation. In January this year, the Fremont, California-based company sold off its multi-user NT technology to Citrix Systems Inc for $25.5m, and instead concentrate on emulation technology and Java (CI No 3,324). Upgrades for existing SoftWindows and RealPC users will be available, but Insignia hasn’t yet revealed the prices.
