Emeryville, California-based Sybase Inc has announced Sybase SQL Server 10 compatibility with eight versions of Unix operating systems that currently include support for Novell Inc’s Internet Packet Exchange/Sequential Packet Exchange protocols. The SQL Server software with native Internet Packet Exchange/Sequential Packet Exchange support is available now on Hewlett-Packard Co’s HP-UX, with scheduled availability on AT&T Corp’s Unix MP-RAS, Digital Equipment Corp’s Alpha OpenVMS, IBM Corp’s RS/6000, Santa Cruz Operation Inc’s Unix, Sequent Computer Systems Corp’s Dynix/ptx and Sun Microsystems Inc’s Solaris for the end of the year. Availability on DEC Alpha OSF/1 is planned for the first quarter of next year. With the new capabilities, Sybase says it aims to simplify enterprise interoperability by enabling personal computer local area network users utilising Internet Packet Exchange/Sequential Packet Exchange to directly access data managed by a Unix-based Sybase SQL Server product. Before now, says the company, in order to interact with Unix-based SQL Servers, personal computer users with Internet Packet Exchange/Sequential Packet Exchange installed for accessing services to the local area network had to install Transmission Control Protocol/Interet Protcol on their client systems. By providing plug-and-play functionality, Sybase says it will reduce users’ maintenance, installation overhead and the need for software on the network to perform protocol translations to make Unix-based database servers accessible on a personal computer local area network.
