IBM’s perennial problem of getting its programmers to treat memory as a precious instead of a limitless commodity seems to be the reason behind the delay in shipping the flagship Release 2.0 of OfficeVision/2 for the PS/2 under OS/2. The product, announced in May 1989, was due to have shipped last March but still hasn’t appeared, Computer Systems News reports. The only version currently available is Release 1.0, offering word processing and electronic mail and not much else. Release 2.0 is intended to add capability to treat programs as objects on the screen, and to enable third party software developers to integrate their applications with OfficeVision. The problem is reportedly getting the program to bun adequately on requesters with 8Mb and servers with 12Mb of memory. It is also said that early support customers have asked for changes and enhancements. IBM is now promising to announce a new delivery schedule before Christmas.
