Computer system factory gate sales dropped by 7.8% in 1991 from a year ago, Dataquest Inc says. According to results of its preliminary market share survey and analysis, the mainframe, mid-range and personal computer segments declined the most in revenue, while the supercomputer segment showed positive growth but slowed down considerably in the year. Factory gate revenue for supercomputers was $1,800m, $26,900m for mainframes, $26.5m for workstations and $109,700m for personal computers. The researcher claims that although the personal computer segment still holds the largest share of the computer system revenue, revenue at factory gate prices fell by 8.3% in the 12 months. IBM Corp holds the largest market share, again based on factory revenue, with about 14.8% and it is followed by Apple Computer Inc with 10.7%, NEC Corp with 7.2%, Compaq Computer Corp with 6.0% and Ing C Olivetti & Co SpA with 3.2%. Dataquest says that the workstation segments continue to have high growth, posting a 14.5% increase. Sun Microsystems Inc holds the largest worldwide workstation market share with about 29.0%, followed by Hewlett-Packard Co with 18.8%, IBM with 16.0%, Digital Equipment Corp with 11.6% and and Intergraph Corp with 5.9%.
