As time goes on, the original specifications for IBM Corp’s Power Personal boxes look more and more out of date. When the machines are finally announced, will they really be based on a 66MHz PowerPC 601? No. Bill Colton, vice-president of the Power Personal Systems division, said the machines will be significantly re-vamped from the prototypes originally flashed around nearly a year ago. Does that mean the machines will be using 100MHz processors? At least, he said. Meanwhile, in the last issue we reported on the demise of Apollo, the swish 603-based slimline desktop. Colton says the machine was not killed so much on grounds of expandability or power, as expense. The styling of the machine meant it required extensive use of non-standard parts, he said, making it costly to make.
