According to IBM, the new products and services are a part of its approach to strategically manage risk across five domains of IT security, including information security, threat and vulnerability, application security, identity and access management and physical security.

IBM Internet Security Systems (ISS) has launched IBM Proventia content analyzer technology for information security designed to manage confidential information. The company states that the technology analyzes data packets across the network detecting the transmission of confidential information, thereby increasing visibility of potential data loss. IBM ISS is partnering with data security vendors, including Application Security, Fidelis Security Systems, PGP Corporation and Verdasys to offer data protection solutions.

IBM Data Security Services (DSS) for activity compliance monitoring and reporting is a new service that protects companies from insider abuse and enhances audit preparedness by assessing, monitoring and alerting on malicious and non-compliant database activity and vulnerabilities. Other services include endpoint data protection, which helps clients encrypt and manage data on endpoint devices, and enterprise content protection, which monitors and protects against intentional and inadvertent leakage of critical data.

The new data security and compliance management solutions include IBM user compliance management software, which performs ongoing audits via established work policies and alerts when violations are detected, and IBM QuickStart services for Tivoli compliance insight manager, which implements IBM’s automated security information and event management software. IBM web application security and compliance management solution offers web application security and online compliance management software.

The IBM system z mainframe also protects data by including security mechanisms such as access controls and audit capability. The updates for this product include IBM mainframe z/OS and IBM Tivoli zSecure.

The company’s competitor Symantec has launched Symantec Database Security 3.0, which prevents loss of sensitive information and ensures compliance. According to Symantec, its main features include intruder identification component, built-in learning capabilities, real-time transaction policy alerts and integration with Symantec Security Information Manager. Symantec has also increased its security portfolio with the acquisition of data loss prevention solutions provider Vontu in November 2007.
