According to figures released by Gartner, IBM has a total market share of 34.6%, moving ahead of Oracle, with 32%. IBM and Oracle would have been essentially sharing market leadership, if it were not for the acquisition of Informix Software, which accounted for 3% market share.

However, in the relational database segment, which represents 80% of the overall database market, Oracle retained its leading market share position at 39.8%. IBM had to settle for second, with a total market share of 34%.
