The non-aggression pact quietly signed between IBM and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd in the early 1980s continues to bear fruit for the Japanese manufacturer, which says that it has applied to the Taiwanese authorities for permission to establish a new plant there to make some larger models of the PS/2 line for IBM. The new unit will be 80% owned by Matsushita, 20% by its Matsushita Electric (Taiwan) Co Ltd affiliate, and will have initial production capacity of 5,000 to 6,000 machines a month. Matsushita already manufactures non-Micro Channel PS/2s in the US for IBM; the news came out of Tokyo, and it is not clear whether the plant will serve only IBM Japan or the US as well. IBM Japan made no comment.include Tricom modems, set by IBM UK for September 4 (CI No 1,485) is likely the PS/1, which will be pitched at small business in Europe.
