Upsetting various monopolies currently enjoyed by Rupert Murdoch, the DirecTV Inc unit of General Motors Corp’s Hughes Electronics Corp says it plans to take its digital direct broadcast satellite television service global in the near future. You’ll hear announcements about Europe and Japan during the next year, Steve Dorfman, president and chief executive of Hughes Telecommunications said in Caracas. According to Reuter, Hughes executives said agreements already existed with several Europea n television operators, including the BBC, Spain’s Antena 3, RAI of Italy and Germany’s Deutsche Welle AG. Dorfman also said the Direct-PC alliance with Microsoft Corp to enable personal computers to receive digital video programming entertainment and interactive data services from DirecTV will be ready this year, enabling access to the World Wide Web.
