Huawei Technologies, a provider of next-generation telecommunication services, has deployed first UMTS commercial network for China Unicom in Zhengzhou, Henan province, China.

According to Huawei, the deployment is expected to enable China Unicom to offer high-speed mobile data services, such as high-speed mobile internet and other advanced multimedia services for its end-users.

In China Unicom’s phase one UMTS tender, Huawei was awarded market share of over 30% based on number of transceiver to be deployed. In February 2009, Huawei connected China Unicom’s first UMTS video call across 20 cites and expects to complete deployment of China Unicom’s entire UMTS network, which includes cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, in April 2009.

Wan Biao, president of wireless product line at Huawei, said: It is a milestone in our cooperation with China Unicom. Based on the rich UMTS network deployment experience, we are confident to help China Unicom quickly deploy high-quality UMTS/HSPA networks across China.  Huawei is committed to working closely with operators in the development of mobile broadband solutions and through such collaboration deliver business success for our customers.
