Hewlett-Packard Co has unveiled ChaiFreezeDrive – software that reduces the size of Java applications so that they can run on small computing devices like smartphones and handheld computers. The software uses compression algorithms and removes unnecessary information from desktop Java code, reducing the space taken up in memory by applications so they be can run on smaller footprint devices. These algorithms are incorporated in a class loader that concentrates Java applications when downloaded to the device. HP claims that this concentration can reduce application memory requirements by more than 50%. HP is demonstrating the software at the JavaOne event in Palo Alto, California now and says that the software will be offered as an option to the ChaiVM 3.0 later this year.
