The new system will allow high street stores to sell a much wider range of titles, rather than just mainstream releases. The in-store kiosks will allow shops to burn films onto DVDs, as well as print labels and cover art while customers wait.

The system received approval last week from the DVD Forum a standards body with more than 200 hardware, software and media companies as members. Film studios including Universal, Sony, Warner Brothers and Disney have given their support for the system as it uses new copyright encryption technology, which prevents buyers from burning the purchases to other DVDs.
