Google has launched about 18 new features to edit and improve the quality of photos and videos on its social service Google+, as part of efforts to take on Facebook.

The search major launched a new technology that automatically makes refined movies, inclusive of music soundtracks, from the collections of users’ home videos and photos on the social network.

Google said it will take out "a lot of the work out of messaging, video calling and photo editing", the latest technology automatically examines users’ home-made videos captured on their smartphones and uploaded to Google+ by automatically making short movies.

Launched at an event in San Francisco, another feature allows users to delete unnecessary parts of a photo.

Google senior vice president Vic Gundotra said with 540 million people active across Google each month, 300 million people active in just the stream and more than 1.5 billion photos uploaded every week, the Google+ community is growing faster than we ever could have imagined.

"Today’s updates are our way of saying "thank you" — we hope they save you time, and help you share your story," Gundotra said.

Other features launched at an event in San Francisco include a tool that allows users to delete unnecessary parts of a photo; SMS text messages into Google’s messaging service; new location-sharing capability; ability to schedule Hangouts On Air; and full-screen video.
