UK mobile operator Three is expanding its international roaming plan Feel at Home to 24 more countries as it continues to push on with its roaming strategy in the wake of the UK's EU Referendum vote.
From 1 September, Three customers will be able to use Feel at Home in 42 countries, which will now include Germany, Greece, Portugal. Croatia, Poland, Belgium, Netherlands, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Malta, Lithuania, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Iceland, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
The plan, available for Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go customers, allows them to use their mobile phone package abroad at no extra cost.
Three is no stranger to the roaming market and, along with its unlimited data packages, has used offerings such as this to differentiate itself from other providers. Thanks to owner Hutchinson Whampoa, Three benefits from direct access to several other European markets: Austria, Denmark, Ireland and Sweden.
The Feel at Home offering already allowed customers to use their UK allowances in 18 popular holiday destinations, such as Spain, France, Australia and the US.
According to Three’s figures, customers save on average £202 using their phones abroad through the plan.
Roaming charges in the EU are set to end completely on 15 June 2017, thanks to an agreement. As it stands, customers of one operator travelling to another and using the local network would have to pay a fee to this local operator. This charge is set to disappear.
Kester Mann, Principal Analyst at CCS Insight, noted that the announcement signified that there was “no change to [Three’s roaming] strategy following #Brexit vote.”
Vodafone is another mobile operator pre-empting the banning of roaming charges, launching an inclusive roaming package across 40 destinations in May.
Customers of Vodafone's Pay Monthly Red and Red Value bundles can use unlimited calls, texts and picture messages with a monthly data allowance of up to 4GB. The new countries covered include the EU as well as Turkey, six Caribbean islands and Switzerland.
The Three plan comes alongside a new holiday promotion launched by the operator, featuring Joey Essex from the hit television show The Only Way Is Essex.
