Having licensed the Workplace microkernel to Goldstar Co to put up on the Advanced RISC Machines Ltd ARM RISC, IBM Corp says the South Korean will use it on the PowerPC as well and has an aggressive plan to use the microkernel. Although the embedded variant will appear first in a television set-top box, and then in a Personal Digital Assistant, the full-blown microkernel will finally go into a Goldstar PowerPC-based workstation. Does that mean that Goldstar will end up licensing the OS/2 personality too? IBM sources say that they do not want to talk before the contract is signed, but intimate that yes, there is a very good chance that it will happen.
