GIPS and Brooktrout are uniquely positioned to resolve the Quality of Service (QoS) challenges applying to voice over IP. Global IP Sound is the developer of SoundWare speech processing technology that dramatically increases the quality and robustness of voice over IP communications. Brooktrout is a leading provider of board-level enabling technology for gateways and media servers. It recently partnered with Telchemy, Inc., to incorporate Telchemy’s VQmon into Brooktrout products to provide real-time voice quality of service performance information. Now, GIPS and Brooktrout are collaborating to give network operators and gateway providers access to easily deployable products that deliver sound quality equal to or better than PSTN, even under adverse network conditions.

Traditional approaches to QoS, such as traffic prioritization, can be costly and presume control of the entire network, a presumption that is rarely valid. By contrast, GIPS and Brooktrout are collaborating to address voice quality at the endpoints — the gateways — independently of what is taking place in the network core. This approach is cost-effective, puts voice quality within the reach of many more service implementors, and is fully compatible with network-based approaches when they are present.

”Quality of service is a major concern for all voice over IP players. Brooktrout recognizes the need for innovative technologies that enable superior voice quality of service in our customers’ products. Through the performance and resilience of GIPS SoundWare combined with the robustness of the Brooktrout boards, we believe our partners can have access to an extremely powerful QoS solution”, says Andrew O’Brien, vice president and general manager, New Public Networks Group at Brooktrout Technology.

The quality of GIPS SoundWare was recently tested by the independent test laboratory within Lockheed Margin Global Telecommunications (previously a part of COMSAT Laboratories). Their report concluded: ”The perceived speech quality performances of the GIPS telecommunications (iPCM) and wide-band (iPCM-wb) solutions show a dramatic improvement over that of traditional G.711 and G.722 codecs, and the other solutions tested, for the range of the impaired-channel scenarios.”

”The partnership with Brooktrout offers great potential for GIPS. Their position in the voice over IP market as a leader and innovator is important for us,” says Paolo Spada, president and chief executive officer of Global IP Sound. He continues, ”The GIPS SoundWare solutions are installed on the voice over IP edge devices as enhancements to standard codecs or as adjacent sound and speech processing software. The ”plug and play” approach ensures high end-to-end sound quality and improved network performance. On IP phones, GIPS can deliver sound quality that significantly surpasses PSTN quality. For gateways, GIPS provides Edge Device quality of service solutions that are flexible, versatile, scalable, and vendor independent.”

About Global IP Sound

Global IP Sound (GIPS) was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1999, and has a team of world leading speech processing and IP telephony experts. The company develops speech and audio processing software for real-time, interactive communications over packet networks. GIPS enhanced standard implementations and new speech processing technology are specifically designed for voice over IP. They provide dramatically increased robustness to degraded network conditions, as well as better than PSTN sound quality and fidelity in end-to-end IP communications.
