The Gartner Group has identified Sacramento, California-based Unify Corp as a company that is likely to emerge as one of the leading independent software vendors of the 1990s. In its report Software Management Strategies, the Group is impressed by Unify’s joint venture with Sumitomo Metals Corp in Japan and with its attitude towards relational database management systems that enables users to treat them as a commodity thanks to the Accell/SQL product. The product runs on Oracle, Sybase, SCO Integra, Informix and Unify 2000 database engines without the need to rewrite code. While Unify currently has an installed user base of 100,000 for its eponymous database, it has sold 50,000 licences for its Accell/SQL tool and will in future focus more on its fourth generation language tools than on the database product.
