Dogging IBM’s footsteps, Fujitsu America Inc, headquartered in San Jose, California, where IBM’s big disk plant is such a blot on the landscape that air traffic controllers use it as an informal beacon, has opened a new research and development center in Raleigh, North Carolina to – surprise, surprise – support the advancement of sophisticated telecommunication technologies in North America; IBM’s Raleigh operations were of course the main US base for communications products before the firm bought Rolm; research at the new Fujitsu base will focus on advanced network telecommunications technologies, including the emerging Integrated Services Digital Network digital speech, data and image standards.
