Fujitsu Group, the Japanese computer company, has announced worldwide plans to ship what it claims is the first magneto-optical drive to support the IEEE 1394 FireWire interconnect standard. The 1.3GB 3.5 device will be PC and Apple compatible, but has clearly been designed with the Apple design and graphics community in mind. FireWire originated in Apple’s laboratories before achieving de jure industry standard status, and the Fujitsu device is packaged in a semi-translucent casing with metallic silver trim – a plain nod to Apple’s fruit-flavored iMAC range. The 1.3GB DynaMO 1300FE version of the product will ship at a recommended retail price of $549, and will be joined in the market by a 640MB DynaMO 640FE version, RRP $349.
