Fujitsu Ltd is to invest $625m to over five years to bet the flat-panel shop on 16 by 9 format 42 plasma displays for use in wall-mounted displays and televisions for the wealthy, and it looks for its annual sales to total $2,080m in the year 2000. Initial investment will be $208m to build a production line in Miyazaki prefecture, southern Japan, which will start operations in October next year, with production capacity of 10,000 plasma displays a month; the other $417m will be for later expansions from 1998 to get output up to 100,000 displays a month by the year 2000. The 42 displays will start at $5,200, falling to $2,000 by 2000.
