Facebook is closing its once-popular social feed aggregator FriendFeed on 9th April.

FriendFeed, once a popular social media platform, allowed users to share links, posts, and photos through a ‘customised feed’.

According to reports, FriendFeed was also used to assemble lists of user-specific content from sites like Blogger, Tumblr, Reddit and Facebook.

The company was acquired by the social media giant in 2009 for $15m in cash, along with $32.5m in Facebook stock, and was considered to be one of the biggest deals of the time.

FriendFeed co-founder Bret Taylor also went on to become Facebook’s CTO.

FriendFeed said: "We’ve been maintaining the service since we joined Facebook five years ago, but the number of people using FriendFeed has been steadily declining and the community is now just a fraction of what it once was.

"Given this, we’ve decided that it’s time to start winding things down."

The company also announced that it will not accept any new signups, and existing users will only be able to view posts, messages, and photos until 9th April.
