Father’s Day has rolled around again, and the sons and daughters of the world are on the look out for gifts. If you’re stuck, consider going in the tech direction with guidance from CBR’s list.
1. Spy Drone
Although CBR cannot at this time cite any formal studies on the matter, it is a widely accepted fact that drones are one of the ‘coolest’ toys currently available. This will probably remain the case for some time, at least until jet-packs reach a higher market penetration.
The prices range up to the thousands of pounds, but the Spy Drone by M:Tech, currently going for £44 on Amazon, provides a good deal for the cost. A 3MP camera, built-in, will allow you to snap images from the sky.
2. LG Urbane
For the sophisticated gent who is a watch fan first and a tech-head second, the LG Urbane aims to combine a luxury watch with high-tech features. The timepiece doesn’t look too openly ‘techy’, meaning it shouldn’t be out of place at a business meeting or a cocktail party.
Running on Android wear and compatible with devices running Android 4.3 and above, it also carries a high capacity battery and is water and dust-resistant. Amazon is currently selling it for £199.99.
3. MakerBot Replicator
3D printers have yet to hit the consumer market in a big way, and while there are miniature models available for lower prices, a real 3D printing experience will probably require you to shell out a few thousand.
Setting you back £3076, the MakerBot Replicator will produce 3D objects from melted MakerBot PLA filament. You use the computer software to translate the design files into instructions, before transferring them to your Replicator using portable storage or wi-fi.
4. Samsung Smart TV
Surely your father can overlook the bizarre spying allegations against Samsung’s Smart TV in exchange for access to premium quality content and a crystal clear 1080p HD display. The key software and connectivity features are integrated into the television set, as opposed to Apple TV which has to be plugged into an existing set.
If having your conversations recorded against your will (or so a clause in the manual suggests) all of this can be yours for £187. There is an optimised ‘Football Mode’ built in.
5. Smarter Coffee
For the dad who has everything – except time – British start-up Smarter pushed out its wi-fi enabled coffee machine earlier this year. The device can sync with an app to wake users up with a morning coffee and sends reminders when it needs refilling, and a ‘Welcome Home’ mode can automatically prepare a coffee when the user gets home.
It can also sync with other gadgets such as fitness bands to adjust the strength of the brew according to user’s overnight sleeping data. It costs £129.99.
