Nigel Farage may remain better known for his pint-swilling abilities than his technology capabilities, according to a new survey by Crucial.com.
The research showed that the majority of UK responents see David Cameron, avid Tweeter of political hashtags such as #CrimeIsFalling and #LongTermEconomicPlan, as the most tech-savvy politician, with Farage polling in a distant fifth place.
Respondents were also polled on London mayor Boris Johnson and Labour‘s Ed Miliband, with 22% and 21% respectively backing them as the most tech-savvy. Deputy prime minister and leader of the Liberal Democrats Nick Clegg came fourth in the survey with 18%.
While 52% of those surveyed believe that knowledge of technology is important for politicians to understand how the industry can contribute to economic growth, 64% of people do not believe that politicians have the necessary knowledge.
"When it comes to technology, it’s important that our political leaders know how to get simple jobs done, as a poor knowledge of technology could have a big impact on the way in which the country is run," commented Roddy McLean of Crucial.com.
The research was carried out by Censuswide in December 2014. It included 1131 UK respondents, aged 16-55 and over, and was carried out online.
