Not every customer will receive such an offer, but EMC’s sales staff has been given the go-ahead to offer 100% discounts on license prices. This is certainly the first time we’ve done this, said EMC’s Kelly Polanski, vice president of product marketing.

EMC’s sales campaign is called Soft Switch, and will see it also discount its maintenance charges for Legato software.

EMC completed its purchase of Legato Systems Inc in the second half of 2003. For the fourth quarter of 2004, it said Legato’s revenue was up 19% year-on-year on an apples-to-apples basis that would assume EMC owned Legato for all of the fourth quarter of 2003.

The software upgrades apply to EMC’s Legato NetWorker, and EMC Dantz Retrospect, respectively updated to versions 7.2 and 7.0. Among other things the NetWorker update enhances with NDMP support for disk-to-disk NAS backups. The update to Retrospect includes easier of installation of the software, and adds data grooming to make space on target disks for disk-to-disk backups.
