Elbit Systems Ltd of Israel has been awarded a major contract to supply the US Airforce with helmet-mounted head-up-display units. The units will be used in the F-22 aircraft and are thought to cost in the region of tens of thousands of dollars each (Elbit did not reveal the value of the deal). The contract is in addition to a contract awarded a year and a half ago for developing HUDs for the F-15, F-16 and F-18 aircraft – a deal valued at several million dollars. If the US Airforce and US Navy decide on serial replenishment, then the new deal could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The work will be done via Elbit’s US subsidiary, Vision Systems International, which is half-owned by Kaiser Aerospace & Electronics.
