The UK Department of Trade & Industry is contributing #3.7m to a #13m intelligent systems programme to aid problem-solving in British industry: called the Intelligent System Integration Programme, it will be made up of eight collaborative research projects and will encourage system designers working for business and industry to include techniques drawn from knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence as part of their standard information toolkit; the programme will provide a pathway for companies to follow from research to end-user take-up and it is hoped that the components will result in an increase in the competitiveness of UK industry through the application of such systems; the programme will run to the end of 1996 and the remainder of the cash will be made up by the Science & Engineering Research Council which will be putting up #1.8m, and industry the rest.
