The Council of Registrars (CORE) yesterday became the third of the five testbed domain name registrars to come online. CORE is an association of about 80 companies and as of press time yesterday, nine of them were registering names in .com, .net and .org straight into the registry maintained by Network Solutions.
The news comes 101 days into what was originally supposed to be a 60-day test period. It was extended by three weeks to July 16 recently by the Department of Commerce. The two remaining testbed registrars are America Online Inc and France Telecom SA’s Oleane unit. Register.com and Melbourne IT already have the shared registry system up and running. There are currently 52 other companies accredited and waiting to enter the market once the test period is over.
