Dell have been developing a new pocket-sized internet device based on Google’s Android operating system, reported the Wall Street Journal citing people familiar with the matter.
According to WSJ, the two people – who saw early prototypes – said that the new device looks slightly larger than the Apple’s iPod Touch but would not have the capability of making calls.
Another person, who is familiar with the company’s plan, told WSJ that Dell may begin selling the device later this year. The person also said that there are possibilities of the plan being delayed or scrapped entirely.
The report also suggests that the new device will become part of the company’s mobile internet devices (MIDs). MID is a multimedia-capable handheld computer, providing wireless internet access, designed to fill the gap between smartphones and tablet PCs.
Dell began developing the device last year, after it dropped plans to compete with Apple in the music player business. This not the first rumor surrounding Dell, it has also been long rumored to be making smartphones.
