In addition to the 14.1 inch display, Dell is offering Intel’s Core 2 Duo 7000 series processors, an Intel 965PM Express chip set, up to 4GB of RAM, a SATA (Serial ATA) hard disk drive with 200GB capacity and an Nvidia Quadro FX 360M dedicated graphics card. The starting price of the M2300 workstation has been set at $1,599.

One of the Dell’s competitors Lenovo has already launched a 14 inch display mobile workstation, the ThinkPad T61p, in early 2007. According to eweek.com, the ThinkPad T61p offers many of the same processor, RAM and hard disk drive configurations as Dell’s Precision M2300, with the starting price beginning at $1,999. However, a higher configuration version of Lenovo’s ThinkPad T61p that features Intel Core 2 Duo T7800 and an Nvidia Quadro FX 570M graphics card, in addition to 4GB of RAM and a hard disk drive with a 200GB capacity has been priced-up at $2,644.

Chris Spencer, a product marketing manager for Dell said that the company was planning to sell the M2300 to software engineers, digital content creators and animators, and workers in the oil and natural gas fields. He said that since the M2300 weighs less than 5.5 pounds, Dell believes these types of workers will be open to putting aside a desktop workstation for a mobile one. Dell is expected to start introducing additional workstations, including traditional desktop models towards the end of 2007.

As a predecessor, Dell launched the Precision M6300 model of mobile workstation on September 4, 2007. The M6300 supports Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors, including Core 2 Duo T7300, T7500 and the T7700 processors.
