The key announcement is the company’s Virtual Data Centre Operating System (VDC-OS), which pulls together all types of hardware resources such as servers, storage and networks into an on-premise cloud and then farms out these resources to the applications that need them most.
VDC-OS changes the virtual landscape in two other ways: delivering a set of application services to ensure availability, security and scalability of applications, separate from operating system or architecture and second delivering cloud services. These cloud services aim to federate capacity between on and off premise clouds.
As part of its vCloud initiative, VMware will be working with 100 cloud service providers, including BT, Rackspace and Verizon to enable customers to tap into capacity on demand.
