Storage and data management systems provider NetApp today announced improvements to its storage management software with the arrival of a free System Manger and additional features that bring deduplication and thin provisioning functions to its line of Windows based FAS2000 and FAS3000 storage systems.

The company said the free System Manager is a Windows tool that automates common device management tasks and supports NetApp storage efficiency technologies like deduplication and thin provisioning, to achieve greater cost savings and performance improvements.

Some existing NetApp products such as Operations Manager, Protection Manager and Provisioning Manager, will now also support deduplication and thin provisioning and other storage efficiency procedures like the making of snapshot copies.

One outcome is that it should be easier to automatically configure and deploy a large number of NetApp systems with different efficiency technologies applied across the storage environment.
