Daihatsu Motor Co has ordered a $5m 500 MFLOPS Cray 7-MP2/1 from Cray Research Inc for delivery in June, saying it needs something about three times the power of its IBM 3090: the machine will be Cray’s 22nd in Japan and Daihatsu is its sixth motor manufacturer customer – Toyota and Nissan have two each, Mitsubishi, Honda and Matsuda one each.
