Poland’s digital company Cyfrowy Polsat has acquired a 100% stake in the online video service ipla for $48m.
Cyfrowy has entered into a deal with Bithell Holdings to acquire shares in the entities which run ipla, including Redefine, Netshare, Frazpc.pl and Gery.pl Redefine in Warsaw, controlled by Zygmunt Solorz-Zak.
Cyfrowy reveals the deal is expected to enhance the company’s position as a content aggregator and distributor and provides a significant competitive advantage in the critical market segment.
The acquisition of ipla also completes Cyfrowy’s strategy to provide better content using devices and technologies.
Ipla is expanding availability on different devices including PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones, connected TVs, game consoles, home cinemas and set-top-boxes, among others.
The video-on-demand service delivers about 20 TV channels and has around 1.4 million users, as against 0.5 million in 2009.
The transfer of the legal rights to the acquired shares and the payment for the shares will be effectuated on April 2.
