Crystal Semiconductor Corp, wholly owned by Cirrus Logic Inc, claims to have the industry’s first single-chip audio subsystem to support spatially-accurate, immersive three-dimensional sound for multimedia computers. The CS4237 chip is pin compatible with Crystal’s CS4236 industry-standard motherboard audio IC and adds Sound Retrieval System technology from SRS Labs Inc for dynamic control of immersive three-dimensional audio, which, since SRS’s technology requires no audio encoding or decoding, and the listener does not need to be in a particular position to hear the spatial effect correctly.
