US email hosting company Critical Path Inc has paid an unspecified amount for Canadian web software developer The DocSpace Company Inc, which has a suite of programmes for collaborative work over the Net, web couriers and secure virtual hard drives. DocSpace founder and manager of its first office in Europe, Sandra Wear, said the acquisition had been a logical step, given the synergies between the two businesses, with the Toronto-based companyÆs offering now becoming part of its messaging solution.

Critical Path has been in an acquisitive frame of mind since its February IPO. It bought Fabrik Connect, Amplitude Software Corp and dotOne Corp to enhance its messaging portfolio in June, then picked up major rival Isocor Inc in a stock deal worth $287m at the end of last month.
