The worldwide market for corporate firewalls is expected to reach more than $1bn in the year 2001, up from $312m in 1997, says market researcher Datamonitor. The total European market for firewalls, meanwhile, is set to reach $340m by 2001. The research firm says that the main growth stimulus in the firewall market is the uptake of Intranet technology by small and medium-sized companies. But Datamonitor predicts a transformation of firewall usage, however, with a movement towards broader functionality and increased integration with other security technologies. Security packages will, it says, offer end-to-end encryption, single sign-on, and single-point management functionality.
