With businesses becoming more concerned about security as governments strengthen the legal status of digital commerce, Compaq Computer Corp plans to build smart-card security and cryptography into its latest Handheld PC Pro (H/PC Pro). Using smartcard technology from Schlumberger Ltd, a Paris, France security systems builder, the H/PC Pro will support data encryption and digital signature capabilities, providing handheld users with the opportunity to send and receive legally binding documents for the first time. The H/PC Pro is based on the Windows CE operating system and will debut at the CardTech/SecurTech conference in Chicago this week.
