Compaq Computer Corp has taken a stake in Engage Technologies, the CMGI Inc-owned provider of profiling and marketing software, at the same time sealing the $2.3m deal that passes AltaVista into the hands of CMGI and makes Compaq the largest outside shareholder with about 16% of CMGI. Compaq will use Engage’s Precision Profiling and Accipiter AdManager technology on its web site at compaq.com. The size and value of the stake was not disclosed.

Compaq has also inked a marketing deal with another CMGI company, Ancestry.com Inc, which will see Compaq’s PCs become the premier PC vendor on Ancestry’s genealogy-oriented web site and the two companies sharing revenues from subscriptions and certain other products sold from the Ancestry site.á
