Since the summer disclosure of an attempted management buyout at Commodore International Ltd (CI No 2,459), little has been heard of the Nassau, Bahamas-based parent company or any of its units around the world. Production ceased world-wide last April when the company decided to liquidate its assets, and since then the liquidators have been trying to balance creditor requirements with the search for buyers for the few remaining profitable arms of the company. However, the longer the search for prospective buyers goes on with nothing being produced, the less attractive the units become. The UK arm, based in Maidenhead, Berkshire is one that actually made a profit. The management there is currently locked in a battle with a US Amiga distributor, Miami, Florida-based Creative Equipment International Inc for the worldwide rights to the Amiga, as well as negotiations for buyout of the UK business. There was talk in May this year of a mystery Asian investor helping to keep the company together (CI No 2,410) – that turned out to be Samsung Electronics Co – but the Korean decided not to get involved.
