Comelta SA, the Madrid-based computing and electronics company in which the Banco Central Hispano is the majority shareholder, has signed Intel Corp to help it manufacture a range of computers based entirely on Intel architecture and technology. The Spanish company is back on its feet after a recent period when debt payments were suspended. Manufacture and quality control of the new family of personal computers will take place at Comelta’s premises in the Valles Technology Park, Barcelona and after-sales service will also be offered from Spain. Tribuna Informatica reports that Comelta hopes the deal will strengthen its position in the high performance professional computing market. The technology is based on the Peripheral Component Interconnect bus and the collaboration will include 80486SX, 80486DX, 80486DX-2 and Pentium configurations through to multiprocessor structures in which two Pentiums may work in parallel in the same bus. The Comelta machines will be able to connect to Intel’s bulletin board in England via modem and facsimile.
