The initial goal of the alliance is to integrate Cognos PowerPlay (the OLAP analysis component of its Cognos Series 7 platform) and Fujitsu’s Symfoware Navigator, which is billed as a scaleable 64-bit information delivery platform for multidimensional data output. The combined offering, which Cognos says will allow a consistent, unified view of business processes and timely delivery or information to users across the enterprise, will initially be targeted exclusively at existing and new enterprise Japanese customers.
Fujitsu, along with NEC Corp, is one of Japan’s leading micro-chip and industrial electronics conglomerates, reporting consolidated revenues of $38bn in its last fiscal year. Recently, both conglomerates have seen their hardware business, particularly semiconductors and telecoms equipment, hit hard by a weak market and intensified competition from Asian rivals. Both are increasingly turning their attention to the computer services business which offers more stable profit margins, though competition is this area is also hotting up.
