Witham, Essex-based components manufacturer CML Microsystems Plc saw profits slide on a flat turnover in 1991, pre-tax earnings down 11% at UKP4m on revenues of UKP14m. Chairman George Curry says his expectations for sustained growth during the second half were not fulfilled, the last six months witnessing a sharp deterioration in the markets served by the UK semiconductor operation. Products employed in Cellular and PMR radio were particularly affected, as order referrals and rescheduling abounded in Europe and some Far East countries. The US semiconductor activity, meanwhile, made good headway in its markets and MX-COM’s results for the year achieved budgeted growth. The UK traffic products market was difficult and, as a result of pressurised margins, Microsense’s profits slipped as turnover grew. The parallel Microsense traffic activity in the US posted satisfactory results. Radio Technology Data has begun operations at its own larger facility in Witham, though manufacture and shipment of its latest range of products, happening now, had suffered some delay. The company’s shares are now listed on the New York Stock Exchange in American Depository Receipt form under the sponsorship of the Bank of New York.
