Cisco has entered into a strategic relationship with Light Sensory Networks provider Sensity Systems, under which the companies will create joint solution to converts city lighting infrastructure into a distributed sensing platform that will be used in Smart City applications.

Smart City applications includes retail analytics, smart parking, lighting, public safety and security solutions, and to create the application Cisco will join Sensity’s NetSense Partner Program.

The joint solution is expected to utilise Sensity’s sensor nodes integrated into Cisco’s City Infrastructure Management (CIM) software.

The solution will embed sensors like video sensors with analytics within LED lighting infrastructure, and to enable application developers to develop Smart City applications the data from Light Sensory Network, exposed through Cisco’s CIM APIs.

Cisco EVP of industry solutions Wim Elfrink said: "Our strategic relationship with Sensity marks a defining moment in our journey of innovation in the Internet of Things and the Internet of Everything."

"We share a common vision with Sensity, recognising that smart lighting is just the tip of the iceberg."

This new platform will create enormous potential for cities as they continue to roll out a platform that can deliver multiple applications and services, all using a common set of sensors, analytics and network for greater productivity, efficiency, and public safety."

Some of Cisco’s application and services partners have already started developing such applications.
