China’s posts and telecommunications industry generated business worth $3,360m in the first quarter of 1996, 40.1% more than the same 1995 period, the Xinhua news agency said. Income rose 37.4% in the first quarter over the same period in 1995, Xinhua said, without further detail. The number of telephone users nationwide grew by 3.8m, bringing China’s total to 46.2m, it said. The growth rate of rural telephone services was as high as 67.3%, the agency said.
